Meet Your Therapist!

Hi!

I'm Mary Klebs,

Licensed Massage Therapist and owner of Fire Island Massage Therapy in Anchorage, Alaska.  I am the mother of two adult daughters and a business owner, and I know the stress that comes from trying to balance time and energy  between family, work, and self.

I have experienced firsthand how chronic stress can manifest in physical pain and ailments.  This often leads us to prescription medications and invasive medical procedures. I am passionate about helping the body heal itself.  This comes in many forms - diet, exercise, spirituality, and maintaining a healthy mind-body connection.  The benefits of regular massage therapy on physical pain and emotional stress are irrefutable. I am living proof of that!

My goal is to offer a safe space for people to heal their emotional wounds and their physical ailments, while enjoying the added benefits of deep breathing and mental and physical relaxation.  If you have aches and pains or are overwhelmed with the stresses of everyday life, you have come to the right place.  Leave your burdens at the door, and let your pain and stress melt away.

I have called Anchorage home since 1995 and raised my beautiful family here.  I love the scenery of Alaska and enjoy getting out in nature whenever possible.  I'm a frequent walker on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and hiker at Glen Alps Trailhead.  I cherish my moments halibut fishing out of Seward or Homer, salmon and rainbow fishing on the Kenai River, and watching the whitefish swim past my bait on Tyone Lake and up and down Tyone River, where I also enjoy glassing for moose and caribou.

I have been fortunate to sing with the Alaska Chamber Singers on and off since 1995, where I have created incredible music with extraordinary musicians.  Much like touch, I believe music and art can sooth the soul and help heal emotional stress.

I enjoy helping where I can within my community.  I have had the privilege to offer free chair massage at the Go Red for Women Luncheon with the Alaska Chapter of the American Heart Association and the Juneteenth Health Fair with the Alaska Black Caucus.  I hope to make both of these fantastic events yearly volunteer traditions.

In my free time, I enjoy any and all activities with my daughters, my two dogs, and my chinchilla.

FAQs

I encourage any and all questions!  That is one of the best way to learn, by asking questions.  And if I don't know the answer, I will do my very best to find it out for you.  Learning is a lifelong process and one I'm so grateful to still be doing.  When we exercise our minds by learning, we are staying healthy and empowering ourselves, promoting the mind-body connection.  So ask away!

Common Question #1

How much do I undress for my massage?

First and foremost, you are always encouraged to undress to your comfort level. Whether you keep on your undergarments on or not, you will always be modestly covered on the table under the sheet/blanket.  However, undergarments can get in the way of reaching the entirety of some muscles - the quads, for example.  But your comfort level is the most important thing to me.  So whether you go bare or stay in your underwear, you will get a professional, therapeutic experience.

Common Question #2

Should I keep my eyes open?

If this is your first therapeutic massage, everything might seem a little "weird."  It's understandable to open your eyes and familiarize yourself with your surroundings.  But as you get more comfortable, you will probably find that having your eyes closed enhances the relaxing aspect of the massage.  And let's face it, relaxing is one of the big reasons you're here!

Common Question #3

Should I talk during my massage?

You are free to talk as much or as little as you'd like.  Many people find that not talking helps them fully enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and get the most benefit out of the experience.  But you may feel that talking helps you release stress or more fully be present in the experience.  Whatever is most comfortable to you.  And I always encourage you to speak up if anything is painful or uncomfortable, or if you would like more or less pressure.

Common Question #4

Massages are supposed to hurt, right??

I do not like to cause my clients pain, even if they request a painful experience.  There are some muscular and tissue issues, however, that can be very uncomfortable to "undo."  Some deep tissue work and fascial release can be quite intense, and yes, even painful.  I will always try to get to the root of your physical issue with the least amount of discomfort possible.  This is why open and honest communication is so important.  Don't ever hesitate to speak up if you need a change in pressure or position.

Common Question #5

Do you accept insurance?

At this time, I am not accepting medical insurance. I am, however, able to accept HSA payments.
